Thousands of passengers diverted after Glasgow Airport incident

GLASGOW. Thousands of airline passengers faced major disruption on tuesday after operations at Glasgow Airport were temporarily suspended following an incident involving a light aircraft on the runway.

Glasgow airport’s only runway was closed for just over an hour after a small plane, believed to be linked to the Glasgow Flying Club, experienced difficulties while landing at around 3.48pm. The closure lasted approximately 72 minutes before normal operations resumed shortly after 5pm.

During the disruption, several incoming flights were forced to divert to Edinburgh Airport, leaving an estimated 1,100 passengers stranded away from their intended destination. Flights affected included services arriving from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Faro, Frankfurt, Malaga, Rhodes, Tenerife and Amsterdam.

Airlines impacted by the incident included British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2.com, Lufthansa, TUI Airways and KLM. Several departures from Glasgow were also delayed, while at least one return service to Frankfurt was cancelled altogether.

Passengers reported long delays and confusion as aircraft circled overhead or diverted east toward Edinburgh. Flight tracking data showed multiple aircraft entering holding patterns before crews were instructed to reroute.

Airport officials later confirmed that emergency services attended the scene immediately after the landing incident. Although details surrounding the aircraft problem have not yet been fully disclosed, authorities said the runway had to remain closed until it was safe to resume operations.

The disruption also highlighted the operational pressure on Glasgow Airport, Scotland’s second-busiest airport, which handles more than eight million passengers annually and serves as a major hub for domestic and European travel.

Travel experts warned that knock-on delays could continue into the evening as airlines reposition aircraft and crews following the diversions. Passengers travelling through Glasgow were advised to check directly with airlines before heading to the airport
